The platform at 59th Street Uptown 1 train was filled with the most beautiful music from an extraordinary cellist tonight. The piece I heard him play was classical (I didn’t recognize it), and the cellist got applause from everyone on the platform, which I’ve never seen in my fifteen years in the city.
If I didn’t have to get to get to Barnes & Noble before midnight, I would have stayed on the platform a little longer. It was a beautiful New York moment.

David Byrne already represented two of my favorite things: eclectic taste in music and New York City. On his internet radio station – Radio DavidByrne.com – he ushers in an amazing mix of music from all over the world. With his new book – Bicycle Diaries – he adds another item to his repertoire of some of my favorite things: riding my bike around the New York City.
Below is a link to his September 21, 2009 post on Huffington Post, an excerpt from the new book. Enjoy!

One of entertainment’s most interesting personalities both on and off the screen is becoming the official new announcer for the New York Philharmonic’s weekly, nationally-syndicated broadcast. Alec Baldwin begins his run on Wednesday September 16th, which is also opening night for the orchestra.
You can tune in on WQXR in New York, which is currently at 96.3 FM, but moving to 105.9 FM on October 8th. You can also listen from anywhere in the world on the WQXR classical stream on iTunes radio.
